McKenzie: Penguins may seek defenseman before trade deadline

Bob McKenzie was on NBCSN’s Intermission Report on Wednesday evening.

On how the Pittsburgh Penguins look at this over the next few weeks with several key injured defensemen:

“That’s a really good question. I mean, some people would say the Pittsburgh Penguins’ primary need is that they need to continue to bolster their depth up front. They need some bigger, stronger wingers. Daniel Winnik from the Toronto Maple Leafs is a guy the Pittsburgh Penguins have looked at on a number of occasions and thought about maybe trying to close a deal on him.

“But with Ehrhoff out with a concussion and not exactly sure - he’s getting better, but nobody knows how quickly that’s going to happen and if it’ll be before the deadline, as far as Christian Ehrhoff’s return goes.

“The Pittsburgh Penguins, their top pair is locked in at Letang and Martin. They’ve probably locked in on their third pair with Scuderi and Despres. It’s what’s happened in the middle with guys like Bortuzzo, Pouliot – the kids – and Ehrhoff.

“If Ehrhoff can’t go, they may need to go out and make an emergency call to get a defenseman in trade, as opposed to going up front. But that’ll be a call that Jim Rutherford makes a little closer to the trade deadline, when they’ve got a little more information on where Ehrhoff’s at.”
