McKenzie: Hurricanes couldn't sign Sekera, will trade him

Bob McKenzie was on NBCSN’s NHL Live on Wednesday evening.

On who might the Carolina Hurricanes move:

“Well, we talked all season long about Andrej Sekera, the defenseman... who’s having a pretty good year. Had a couple of pretty good years in Carolina.

"The Canes really tried hard to get this guy under contract, but Sekera was looking for what we’ll call Marc Staal money. The New York Ranger defenseman recently signed a multi-year contract for between $5.5-6 million a year. That’s too rich for the Carolina Hurricanes.

"So he, along with Cody Franson, Zbynek Michalek, and a whole bunch of other guys are those rental defensemen that we’re talking about. Their teams are trying to get a first round pick or a really good prospect for them. May have to settle for a second round pick and a fair to middling prospect. But the Carolina Hurricanes have Andrej Sekera in play, as do the Toronto Maple Leafs with Cody Franson, as do the Arizona Coyotes with Zbynek Michalek.”
