McKenzie: Kane's next three years will be pivotal to career

Bob McKenzie was on NBCSN’s NHL Live on Wednesday evening.

As part of a discussion on Evander Kane and the trade:

“For a guy like Kane, here’s what’s at stake. He’s 23 years old. He’s got three years left on his contract. He’s going to be an unrestricted free agent at the age of 26. One of two things is going to happen:

"He’s going to put behind this episode with the Winnipeg Jets and he’s going to become a perennial goal scorer. At age 26, he’s going to tell Terry Pegula and the Buffalo Sabres, ‘Back the money truck up. Gimme that young money. Gimme that cash money.’ And he’s off to the races.

“Or he’s going to prove he’s the bad seed. That he didn’t learn his lesson from what happened in Winnipeg. And he’s going to be 26 years old, a two-time loser in the National Hockey League, scraping and trying to find a job if he doesn’t pan out the way they think.

“But the Sabres are convinced that he’s going to be just fine and he’s accelerating their rebuild. Instead of going with prospects, this is a 23-year-old who is ready to contribute next season when he’s healthy.”
