Dreger connects Leafs, Rangers on potential Santorelli trade

Darren Dreger was on NHL Network’s NHL Tonight on Wednesday evening.

On the New York Rangers:

“The Rangers are looking for a depth center. Mike Santorelli was a player who the Rangers went after as an unrestricted free agent. The Rangers didn’t have cap space. The best they could do was around $1 million. The Toronto Maple Leafs came in and they got him for $1.5 million.

“The Toronto Maple Leafs like Mike Santorelli a lot. Do they like him enough to extend him on a three-year term, say at around $3 million, maybe better than $3 million per? Probably not. But that might be the going rate for Mike Santorelli because he’s been a good add for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

“So the Rangers would like that rental component of Santorelli, or other players. But I would look for the Leafs and the Rangers to maybe do something if things don’t change for Toronto and if the New York Rangers are still in the market at that point of the deadline.”
