Dreger: Contract negotiations underway between Leafs, Kadri

Darren Dreger was on Toronto’s TSN 1050 on Thursday morning.

On the latest on contract negotiations between the Leafs and Nazem Kadri:

“It’s my understanding the negotiations are underway, but I can tell you no formal offer to Nazem Kadri or his representation has been made. So the numbers that are being speculated can’t be far off the mark. When you’re talking about an extension for Nazem Kadri, five years would make a lot of sense. Around $4-$4.5 million is probably fair market value for him from a Leafs perspective. I’m not sure Nazem Kadri is going to bite on those numbers.

“But Dave Nonis said prior to the holiday roster freeze that early into the New Year he’d have to start pecking away at some of these deals. And it’s not just the unrestricted free agent guys, starting with Cody Franson. You have to get an appreciation or understanding from your restricted free agents like Nazem Kadri what your expectations are.

“Kadri is still a very valuable player to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Absolutely. I think for the most part, even though like many he’s gone through some scoring woes of late, and that’s an understatement. Although he scored another one last night. I think that he’s shown significant progress this year. I believe the Leafs want to keep him. So a five-year term makes sense.”
