Dreger: Speculation, wondering continues on Canes' Ward
/Darren Dreger was on TSN 1040 Tuesday morning.
On the turnaround of the Carolina Hurricanes, who are winning some games now:
“Yeah, well they’ve got Eric Staal back into the mix. Prior to that, you had your top two centres in Carolina on the injured list – the brothers Jordan and Eric Staal. You take the top two centres off any NHL team, they’re going to struggle mightily.
“But by Staal coming back, you’re still kind of putting a band-aid on the bigger problem and the Carolina Hurricanes, although they spent some money in the off-season, still are a team with all sorts of holes in the lineup. And they need their best to absolutely outperform the other teams’ best and it starts in goal with Cam Ward. We’ve talked openly over the last several months about what his future is with the Hurricanes organization. People still speculating and wondering if, in fact, he’s going to be a buyout target. And you go down the list from there.
“So the Hurricanes, they might be doing themselves a disservice by continuing to win. The one thing we know – and this is the argument that always defeats the theory of tanking – players never buy into it. It’s a good theory as an owner or as a fan base or as management to have, but players don’t buy into it.”
