Dreger: Blues "expressed some interest" in Lupul

Darren Dreger was on Toronto’s TSN 1050 on Tuesday morning.

On how movable Joffrey Lupul’s contract is in the off-season, and how attractive to other teams he may be:

“I don’t think there’s going to be teams lining up for Lupul, but I know that there are teams who have some interest.

“The St. Louis Blues, for an example, are a team that expressed some interest in Joffrey Lupul.

“And there would be other teams. I want to say Ottawa kicked tires, but again, you have to be careful in establishing definitive interest or tire-kicking. There’s a lot of that that goes on right up until the trade deadline. Particularly if you’re Ottawa and you’ve got a Colin Greening – a contract that you want to move out. Maybe there’s a fit financially where you take a chance on Lupul and you move out some dollars, and financially it makes a lot of sense.

“Hey, when Joffrey Lupul is healthy and playing more like he played last night, you can appreciate why there would be teams that would have interest. This guy is a veteran player. He does have some scoring touch, although he hasn’t shown much of that (laughs) over the past 20 games or so. But there’s still upside.

“If you can convince yourself as a general manager that his bad luck injury-wise is behind him, then maybe there’s the right fit. And there’s always teams out there that are looking for a reclamation project. And maybe that sounds a little bit unfair for Joffrey Lupul, but I do think that there’ll be interest in him for sure.”
