Dreger: Could Shero land as GM in San Jose?
/Darren Dreger was on Toronto’s TSN 1050 on Friday afternoon.
As part of a larger discussion on the Joe Thornton/Doug Wilson conflict story from Friday – including a mention of how the GM and coach have philosophical differences - and how Dreger thinks this will end in San Jose, in terms of who goes:
“Ooh, that’s a great question. Again, what we don’t know is what ownership is thinking. Do they share the same views and are they buying into the speculation. They control the decisions that need to be made.
“Who would go into San Jose, if you start with the general manager? Ray Shero is going to land somewhere. Depending on what happens in Ottawa with Bryan Murray, if he’s healthy enough to continues. He’s got good lieutenants there in Pierre Dorion and Randy Lee. Ray Shero is going to land somewhere. He’s that good... He’s too good to be unemployed for too long. Is San Jose a good landing spot for him and then what do you do about the coach.
“This is going to fuel it.”
Later in the discussion, Dreger says:
“I believe that Todd McLellan is an excellent coach, I really do. Is it similar to Barry Trotz in Nashville for all of those years. Those were good teams. They, maybe for budget reasons, never found a way to get over the hump.
“I’ll tell you what: If there’s a coaching change and a full-scale change in San Jose, Todd McLellan is cut loose, we’ve always wanted to connect him to Edmonton - he’d be at the top of the page for me in Toronto. He would be.”
