Dreger weighs Sekera trade's impact on Petry's value

Darren Dreger was on Edmonton’s TSN 1260 on Thursday morning.

On how Andrej Sekera’s trade cost impacts Jeff Petry’s asking price from the Edmonton Oilers, if at all:

“It probably doesn’t and maybe it just presents a bit more resolve for Craig MacTavish to keep his poker face on and continue to push for what he’s asking for, but it also takes another team out of the market. I don’t know that L.A. is officially done yet, but unlikely that they’re going to add another defenceman. We’ll see. Again (laughs), Lombardi seems to have a few tricks up his sleeve. But there’s still teams out there that are looking for a defenceman.

“I guess the issue that Edmonton might have is a team like Detroit is weighing its options and leaning toward not doing much of anything. Now as soon as I say that, Kenny Holland will take the Louisville off his shoulder and he’ll hit one out of the park.

“But teams are looking at the remaining players and the asking prices attached and going, ‘Is Jeff Petry a huge step up on the inexperience of Alexey Marchenko?’

“And if the answer to that is no, then there comes a point where even Detroit has to stop giving away decent draft picks and focus on what they have and just hope for the best.

“If Jeff Petry would guarantee that Detroit is going to win a round or two by adding him, then we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Detroit would have made the deal by now. Obviously there’s no guarantee in that and still very aware they’ve overachieved this year and they’re in transition. This draft is going to be a good one and they need to pay attention to their draft picks.”
