Flyers have no cap room for Richards, Hexy says..
— Sam Carchidi (@BroadStBull) January 26, 2025
Any team picking up Richards would face potential cap-recapture penalty. Kings also on hook. Not Flyers, who gave him deal. #"MrSnider"

If Richards clears waivers, sent to AHL, $925K of $5.75M cap hit comes off LA's cap. So Richards would represent $4.825M of dead cap space.

CBA dictates that NHL waiver order is based on teams having the lowest PERCENTAGE of possible points in standings. Not simply lowest points.
— Chris Nichols (@NicholsOnHockey) January 26, 2025
The CBA allows players placed on waivers to request permission from their own club to talk to other teams about potential interest in them.

Leafs source says they will NOT put in a claim on Mike Richards in case people are wondering

If Richards clears, expectation is he'll be assigned to Manchester (AHL). LA obviously hopes waivers may flush out more trade options.

TOR/CGY believed to be teams talking recently to LA about Richards trade. Guessing Leafs/Flames were trying to move their bad contracts.
— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) January 26, 2025
Expectation is that if Richards clears waivers tomorrow he'll be re-assigned to AHL Manchester. Unless of course Kings can work out a trade
— Pierre LeBrun (@Real_ESPNLeBrun) January 26, 2025
If Richards retires before end of contract, especially in penultimate or last year, LA gets dinged with significant cap recapture penalty.
— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) January 26, 2025
Richards has $5.75M cap hit for 5 seasons after this one. He's being paid $7M this season, $6M, $5.5M, $4.5M, $3M and $3M in remaining yrs.

Kings had tried to find trade interest for Mike Richards with a few teams over past month (including Toronto and Wpg). Now on waivers!

To clarify - "can't" spend Voynov money in case he comes back this season... and "savings" on Richards cap hit is $925K if he goes unclaimed
— The Mayor John Hoven (@mayorNHL) January 26, 2025
Waivers has mulitple benefits: 1) sends clear msg to the room 2) gives Lombardi cap room that he really didnt have (cant spend the Voynov $)
