Dreger on Oilers, Canadiens, Petry, Schultz
/Darren Dreger was on Montreal’s TSN 690 on Thursday morning.
On which of Justin Schultz or Nikita Nikitin might be more attractive to the Canadiens in a trade with the Oilers concerning a defenceman:
“Well, Jeff Petry’s name is out there. And again, he’s a pending unrestricted free agent. And you know what? When you’re a team like Montreal, or any team that likes what they have and are concerned about the dollars they have coming in – that old balance of dollars coming in and dollars going out – the expiring contract isn’t a bad thing.
“But again, there are so many teams looking for either help on defence or an upgrade on defence, that Jeff Petry is probably going to command more than what most teams would want to pay under a normal circumstance.
“But to trade Justin Schultz – I’m not saying that’s impossible. I think he fits into that young core that Craig MacTavish is still trying to analyze to figure out whether or not he can build a winning team with that group. So I’m not saying that Schultz is off-limits, but I think in terms of defence in Edmonton, Jeff Petry is likely going first.”
