Dreger: Bruins' Chiarelli "working the phones"

Darren Dreger was on Vancouver’s TSN 1040 on Tuesday afternoon.

On if there is a team more desperate than Boston right now:

“No, I think Boston is right at the top of the list, and the Toronto Maple Leafs might be clawing their way up there based on just their poor defensive performances over the last number of games now.

“Boston really felt the loss of David Krejci and obviously Zdeno Chara was a huge hole they had to fill early.

“And the Johnny Boychuk trade, I think now, was ill-timed. If you want to be critical of Pete Chiarelli, and it’s hard, given what that organization has accomplished over the years. Johnny Boychuk was a big piece. And they’ve never been able to fill the void of either Jarome Iginla or Nathan Horton. That’s a pretty big spot in their line, in their top-six.

“So I know Chiarelli is working the phones. He’s trying. But they’re a cap team and when injury bites and you create bigger holes in your lineup by moving a player like Johnny Boychuk, maybe this team has been slow to try and react.

“So I think desperation is a word that should be attached to the Boston Bruins.

“The Leafs aren’t desperate yet. If they continue to lose, or at least don’t tighten up defensively, then they’re going to hit that label of desperation pretty quickly.”
