Dreger: Trade price on Leafs' Reimer "would have to be substantial"

Darren Dreger was on Toronto’s TSN 1050 on Thursday morning.

On if the success of the Leafs means James Reimer will be happy in a backup role, or if we’ll hear him say he wants out and that he wants to be a starter somewhere else:

“You know what, I doubt you hear that in-season. But I wouldn’t be surprised if we start hearing some of that in the off-season. But I’ve asked Dave Nonis about it. Everybody’s watched what’s going on in Edmonton and the fact that that team has struggled from the goaltending perspective this year. And it would make some sense that Craig MacTavish would hook up with Nonis and ask about James Reimer. I don’t know that that’s happened. But the asking price, the return, would have to be substantial for Toronto to even remotely consider trading James Reimer, given how well he’s played and how well he complements Jonathan Bernier.

“Hey, there’s a fierce competition in that crease. Reimer is a heck of a team guy. He won’t make waves, I don’t believe, in-season. And I think he’s going to be a model season in the dressing room and do everything he can to support Jonathan Bernier, because he wants what’s best for the team. But he also wants to be that guy. He feels like he’s earned that opportunity in the National Hockey League. If Jonathan Bernier is better, and we think he is, then he’s going to have to continue to wait. But hey, beneath the surface there’s no doubt he wants that crease as much as anyone, including Bernier.”
