Dreger: GM told me he thinks O'Reilly trade is close
/Darren Dreger was on Toronto’s TSN 1050 on Thursday evening.
On how he sees the timing of a trade for Ryan O’Reilly:
“Well, it depends on who you ask. I had a general manager this morning tell me that he thinks there’s something close. That there’s something brewing with Colorado specific to Ryan O’Reilly in a trade. But we did our due diligence and you try and scour, looking for that fit. And then you get some pushback information that suggests that if the Avs are willing to trade Ryan O’Reilly, it’s safer and maybe they get a better return if they wait until the offseason.
“So nothing would surprise specific to Ryan O’Reilly. But he brings big numbers. Both in the qualifying offer and in the fact that he too is an unrestricted free agent in just 18 months from now. So as much as he’s going to help a team, the team that acquires him when they acquire him had better be sure that he’s worth the money they’ll have to pay and long term worth whatever that extension is going to have to be to pay the price to acquire him.”
