LeBrun: Byfuglien could command $5.5-$6.5 million per year on new contract

Pierre LeBrun was on Winnipeg’s TSN 1290 on Friday afternoon.

On what a contract extension for Dustin Byfuglien would look like if he maintained this high level of play:

“Well, that still changes. As every extension gets signed here over the next few months, it alters the marketplace. Marc Staal has agreed in principle to a new deal that will deal will pay him north of $5.7 million and he’s a very good defenceman. Not as good offensively as Dustin, but maybe he does some things that are a little safer defensively. So they’re not the same player.

“But again, I guess what you’re going to have to ask of Byfuglien when the time is to sit down with him, whether it’s the Jets or another team: Are you a defenceman or a forward (laughs)?  You need to know what your comparable is.

“Now, if I’m Winnipeg what I do is I’ll wait for the year to play out. Continue to see how he produces. At one year out, you want to maybe have a chance to talk to him, so you’re not left holding that back in his UFA year.

“But I would suggest for a player like him anywhere from probably from $5.5-6.5 million a year is the market right now.”
