Friedman on Green's trade value for Capitals
/Elliotte Friedman was on Washington’s Monumental Network on Saturday, which was posted on Monday morning.
On if Mike Green is a luxury on this deep Capitals defense:
“I think the No. 1 thing I look at if I’m a general manager is, ‘Do I think we can win this year?’ It’s so hard to win. And I remember the year Tampa won the Stanley Cup. They knew that they were going to have cap issues and Khabibulin and all that, and they just said, ‘We’re going to keep our guys and we’re going to go for it.’
“I think whether they decide to sign Mike Green or not, I think the play of the team is going to determine the decision on Mike Green. Like, if you think you can win a Stanley Cup, or make a run at it, and Mike Green is going to be important to that, then you keep him no matter if you think you can sign him or not.
“And I think it changes. The GM’s biggest evaluation is a) How good are we, and how important is he to that. And if you look at it and you say, ‘We’re not good enough,’ or ‘We don’t necessarily think he’s important,’ or ‘What he can get for us can be important.’ Because I’m sure they have a pretty good idea what Green’s trade value is. Then you make that decision and say, ‘Is he more valuable to us, is he more valuable for what he can get for us?’”
