Insider Trading
/Tuesday's edition of TSN's Insider Trading featured Darren Dreger, Pierre LeBrun and Bob McKenzie.
Dreger on if Eric Staal might be available at some point, and if the Leafs would then be interested:
"Well, very interested. But the key word is 'if.' If Eric Staal is available. But I know this. The Toronto Maple Leafs have had discussions with the Carolina Hurricanes in the past, most recently in the summer, about the potential availability of the Carolina Hurricanes' captain. Now the asking price, if Eric Staal is available at any point this season prior to the NHL trade deadline, is going to be enormous. It would include a first round pick. You're talking about either Tyler Bozak or Nazem Kadri because a centre would have to go back and likely Jake Gardiner. But I believe that's a price Toronto would pay."
McKenzie on Eric Staal:
Eric Staal, all things being equal, really likes it in Carolina. Has a no-move clause. Likes playing with brother Jordan Staal. But Eric Staal is driving the bus. Any trade would only happen when and where he wants it to. Same thing for Jordan Staal and Cam Ward.
Dreger on Jeff Petry:
Healthy scratch tonight. Not a good sign moving forward. Wouldn't say anything is imminent, but I think within the next month or Craig MacTavish "absolutely will entertain that possibility." Packaged for a centre? Perhaps. Might be packaged for as little as a draft pick. They believe in Darnell Nurse and Oscar Klefbom.
LeBrun on Methot:
"I think they can get this done at 5 X 5. The question is, are the Senators comfortable with that type of contract." Their last offer was $4.7 million per year. Talks expected to resume this week. "If he doesn't sign in the next month, I think there's a real chance he could be traded."
McKenzie on Nathan Horton:
"There is real concern. This is a player who is no closer today to getting on the ice and playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets than he was at the beginning of training camp."
LeBrun on thought Sabres are tanking:
Tim Murray told me Tuesday he's indignant at anyone who would think they're trying to tank the year.
I think Sam Reinhart will head back to junior after nine games.
