Dreger: Burke "not at all happy" with Wilson's criticism of Kessel
/Darren Dreger was on Toronto’s TSN 1050 on Wednesday evening.
As part of a larger discussion on the criticism of Phil Kessel:
“I don’t know if Brian Burke will speak out publicly. I don’t know that it’s representative of the Calgary Flames that he comes out swinging. But I spoke to Burke earlier today and he was not at all happy with Ron Wilson... And he and Wilson are good buddies, so this isn’t personal. It’s just that he’s like, ‘Hold on a second.’
“It’s easy to pick at the carcass now, but Burke says when Wilson was head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Brian Burke was the boss, not one time did Ron Wilson complain about the work ethic, the execution, or the fact that he was unreliable. So why is he doing it now?
“And I think that there’s something to that. Ron Wilson now has the freedom (laughs) as an unemployed NHL head coach that he didn’t have when he was employed. And I’m not saying that Wilson’s opinion on Phil Kessel doesn’t matter. Of course it does. Of course it does. But Brian Burke is protective because he was the guy who acquired Phil Kessel in the Boston Bruins trade, and he thinks that Wilson’s comments yesterday were pretty unfair.”
