Sabres' Murray: "I would love to be Kenny Holland"
/Sabres GM Tim Murray was on Buffalo’s WGR 550 on Wednesday morning.
On how he has a dream job and if he’s having fun listening to trades:
“No. It’s no fun. I would love to be... who? I would love to be Kenny Holland. 23, 22 years making the playoffs. Not having GMs call you about available players because there’s nobody available. And the only trade you have to make, each and every year around the deadline, is to add a veteran guy to play on your third line or whatever that you feel could put you over the top, and that may be a second round pick. If it’s a second line player, maybe a first round pick. And you know you don’t even mind giving up a first round pick because you have that type of team. That would be fun, to me.
“This fantasy hockey stuff is not fun. But it’s reality. We have - I don’t know the exact number, but quite a few guys that are going to be unrestricted free agents, potentially at the end of the year. I have said all along I’m not going to lose a guy for nothing, if I can help it.
“Even a fifth or sixth round pick. You know what? It doesn’t sound like much, but for a certain player that fifth or sixth round pick - it might only happen once every 11 years , but you could hit on that. That could be a European goalie. That could be a late bloomer.
“So I’m certainly open. I’ve talked to a couple of our veteran guys. Definitely Gionta. I’ve said, ‘I’m not here to rip this team apart, but I’m going to tell you that we’re not going to lose a pending free agent for nothing.’
“If we can get an asset back, whatever that asset may be, or deem to be, we’re going to do that. And that’s going to make the Buffalo Sabres better down the road.”
