McKenzie: "Bidding will be fast and furious" on Sekera, Franson, Michalek
/Bob McKenzie was on Vancouver’s TSN 1040 on Tuesday morning.
On how sought after Cody Franson is, and how much do the Leafs want for him:
“Highly-sought after, and I’m sure the Leafs will try to extract a big price. The normal price for a rental defenceman at the deadline is usually a second round pick and a pretty decent prospect or a young player. Depending on how much interest there is, you can sometimes parlay that second round pick into a first round pick. And I’m sure that’s what the Leafs will be trying to do.
“The team in your town tonight, Anaheim, would be a team that might be interested in Cody Franson.
“The Carolina Hurricanes have Andrej Sekera, who they’re trying to take one last stab at signing here, but if they don’t, he’s going to go on the market.
“You’ve got Zbynek Michalek in Arizona as a rental defenceman.
“So we’re starting to line up a cache of rental defencemen here. Sekera, Franson, Michalek. Yandle would fit in a different category there because he’s got term left on his contract. So I think it’ll be interesting. There’s no shortage of teams after a top-4 NHL defenceman. Sekera, Franson, Michalek all fit the bill of a top-4 defenceman in the National Hockey League.
“So I would think the bidding will be fast and furious on those guys, and their respective teams are going to come out with at least a second round pick and a good prospect or young player. And maybe if they can really drive up the price, they can snag a first round pick along the way.”
