Friedman: Avalanche could be nearing trade decision on O'Reilly
/Elliotte Friedman was on Calgary’s Sportsnet 960 on Monday morning.
As part of a discussion on the struggles of the Colorado Avalanche this season:
“I think they’ve been kind of disappointed in some of their guys. I hear O’Reilly’s name is kind of out there. I wouldn’t be surprised if Colorado is getting to the point where they’re kind of saying, ‘Maybe we have to make a decision on him, and maybe it’s time.’
“They need defensemen really badly and they don’t have a lot of defense coming, so I think I could really see a situation coming where they’re looking at it and saying, ‘If we can get a defenseman, maybe Ryan O’Reilly is the guy who gets us that.’
“But I do think they’re kind of looking. I mean MacKinnon, he’s had a really rough year. I don’t think you jump off that bandwagon. I mean, the kid’s only 19 years old, but I think he’s learning this year how hard it is to be a consistently successful player in this league.”
To wrap up the discussion:
"I think Colorado, they have some big-time, long-term decisions to make, and I'm curious to see where they're going to go with them."
