LeBrun on Ryan's contract, Alfredsson's health

Pierre LeBrun was on TSN 1200 Tuesday afternoon.

On Bobby Ryan and the Ottawa Senators:

“In the case of Bobby Ryan, and I know it got reported different ways last week, but I think it’s a lot of different ways that is underlining the truth, which is this: I think that the Senators are willing to do a long-term deal with them and I think the response from Newport, at this point, was it’s not so much they rejected it, it’s that they just, I don’t think, ready to have that serious discussion yet.

“Now, does that raise a red flag? Maybe, down the road, as this continues throughout the season. But it also may just mean that hey, maybe Bobby wants to see how he does first couple months of the year. How the team does, life after Jason Spezza, you know, before making that kind of decision. And frankly, probably don’t blame him.

On Daniel Alfredsson and the Detroit Red Wings:

“I think my sense is it’s status quo for now. Traded emails with J.P. Barry today. I think Alfredsson wants to give his back a little more time to see how it’ll respond and then probably take another run at in terms of working out again and going hard and seeing where his body is at.

“So I don’t – I mean, this is just me and I’m probably speculating more than I should – but I don’t know if Alfredsson will be in a position to figure out his future definitely before October 8 when the season starts. I think he might need a bit more time than that and I suspect Detroit is okay with giving him that time.”
