Coyotes refocus on protecting leads
/Interesting look via azcentral.com at the Coyotes' inability - quite uncharacteristically - to protect leads in 2013-14.
General manager Don Maloney explains how it used to be for this team.
"We had a real identity of being able to lock games down and lock teams out and when we're leading after the second period, you could basically shut your (TV) sets off," Maloney said. "We're going to win that game."
Something will be done this summer to attempt to remedy the situation.
"The bottom line is in the past, we find ways to get those games and win those games and we didn't," Maloney said. "So, it really comes back to an analysis of all of us: my job, scouting job, coaching job, players. We have to go back and say what happened and why has it happened and how do we fix it and that's what we're all about.
"… The owners came in, they expanded the budget, spent more than what was certainly allocated at the start of the year and to not get the results, that's bad management and that's on me. So we have to go back and not let that happen again."
