Potvin sees hurt pride in Brodeur's comments

Hall of Famer Denis Potvin shares with The Star-Ledger his opinion on New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur's recent comments about the team and his situation.

“I don’t know enough about his personal life, but don’t go looking at your coach, your GM or the other goaltender or things around you,” Potvin told The Star-Ledger. “It’s pretty obvious to me and everyone in the league that when Cory Schneider shows up, somebody is going to take a bit of a back seat.

“And, by the way, he’s played 37 games. I don’t know how many backup goaltenders in the NHL have started 37. So I think there is a little hurt pride. We all have good egos, otherwise we can’t do this. I understand that. I have great respect for Marty and I feel for him.”

Potvin continued.

“He’s probably feeling the end of it and he doesn’t know if anything is going to happen for him come (July 1 and next season),” Potvin suggested.

“My point when I see this is, ‘Hey, make a personal decision.’ You’re always going to miss hockey. I’m 25 years out of the game and I know (playing) is the best thing I ever did. I’m not going to do anything better than play hockey. But you adjust and you move on. It sounds to me from reading and talking to people, Marty is right there. That thought process is very much a part of what he is doing.”

Potvin also relays how the end of his career came about, including why he tried to go out on his own terms and why Brodeur's future could be as a GM.
