Sabres may deal for goalie if Miller is traded

There has been more than enough trade chatter regarding the Buffalo Sabres and Ryan Miller in recent months and especially the last few days, as we're heading into the final week before the NHL trade deadline on March 5. Refreshingly, much of that chatter was generated from the key players - Sabres GM Tim Murray and Miller himself.

Wednesday night in The Buffalo News though, the point was brought up that while Jhonas Enroth is raring to go for the Sabres, they don't necessarily have a second NHL-ready goalie quite yet with Nathan Lieuwen or Matt Hackett

“We have a couple good young goalies here, and if one of them is the goalie of the future, it’s not the near future,” Murray said in Rochester this month while watching the Amerks. “It’s a little bit down the road. I don’t think either one of them is ready to step in and start for the Buffalo Sabres.”

Some salient points are raised by Amerks coach Chadd Cassidy on that very subject too.

The News points out that Lieuwen is 6-foot-5 and Hackett is 6-2. Enroth is 5-10.

“They’re both good size, which I like,” Murray said. “I like big goalies.”

Also from Murray: “That would be the one position that I’ll waffle on. I don’t waffle very often, but I’ll leave that out there and let those guys decide who it is.”

A line in the piece notes the Sabres are expected to make a number of trades in the next week, and it's likely a goalie will come to Buffalo as one of them if Miller is, in fact, traded.
