Report: Red Wings interested in Islanders' MacDonald
/Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland discusses the upcoming trade deadline, as relayed by Michigan Live.
He said he won't be a seller at the deadline.
On the possibility of a rental: “What’s the expense of the rental? When you’re one point up on the last playoff spot it’s hard to trade a top prospect or a first-round draft pick to rent a player.
“At the same time we’re always looking to upgrade. If there’s a hockey trade out there – I call a hockey trade a trade that affects your team going into next season – I’m obviously open to it.
“Those days in the late ’90s and early 2000s when you would trade one or two or three first-round picks to acquire players is hard to do when you’re in our position.”
Holland spoke with a half-dozen or so GMs at the Olympics. Calls are starting to come in.
A source tells MLive that the Red Wings have interest in Andrew MacDonald of the Islanders, while past interest in Alex Edler of the Canucks is also noted. Along with his no-trade clause.
Holland is quoted in the article as saying he, like many other teams, is looking for a defenseman.
