LeBrun on Canadiens' cap space, trade needs
/Pierre LeBrun was on Montreal’s TSN 690 on Tuesday evening.
On what he expects from Marc Bergevin once the roster freeze lifts:
“As for this year, he’s obviously already done some important shop keeping in terms of getting the Bourque and Moen deals off books for next year. That was a real point of emphasis for him headed into the year, to clean up some of his payroll headed into the offseason because we’re not sure how much the cap is going to go up. Gary Bettman said $73 million, but that’s really contingent on the Canadian dollar between now and June 30. So those were two really important moves for Bergevin in terms of getting his cap in order.
“I suspect that what – and this has sort of always been his goal – but again, if there’s a way to get bigger up front, I think it’s the kind of piece that would make sense for the Habs before March 2. They’re still a team that even though they’re bigger now than the day he was hired - Marc Bergevin - still a team that can get pushed around at times and I think that would be the kind of piece that would make sense.”
